Lahti Pride is an open-to-all human rights event, which Lahden Seta ry organises every year. The first Lahti Pride was celebrated in 2014 and, every year with one exception, the event has produced a parade, a market or park gathering, trainings, parties, art and culture events and a variety of support groups.

In 2019 the Lahti Pride event will be held for the fifth time, at the end of May. As with previous years, the event is driven by a desire to promote sexual and gender equality in society, to make visible diversity of sexual orientation and gender, and provide opportunities to meet as well as being seen through the various rainbow events. In addition to the main celebration and various events Lahti Pride brings forth political perspectives and invites discussion.

This year the event’s theme is family. Family and other close relationships are for most of us extremely important and essential for wellbeing. The range of families is wide. In addition to nuclear-, step-,single parent and clover families there are, for example, selected families. We want to celebrate this diversity of families and close relationships and give the opportunity to think more broadly about the kinds of meaningful relationships people tie. On the other hand, we also bring up a variety of challenges faced by different families, so that together we can find solutions that benefit us all. Finland has taken steps to a more equal direction since the Parliament adopted the law of equal marriage and the new motherhood law. For example there is room for improvement in the social equality of diverse families. The various family structures, as well as possible special needs should be taken into account increasingly in both services and legislation. In addition equal access to fertility treatments, regardless of gender, should be ensured. The implementation of adoption rights in practice should be promoted and the possibilities of creating a family through surrogacy examined. A full reform of the law on child custody is underway, during which points such as the child’s right to meet their factual parent and broader possibilities to agree on the child’s custody issues were made. We will do all we can to ensure that the rainbow themes will not be forgotten during the time before the election.

Rainbow themes are also present at other times outside the actual Pride event. Sexual and gender minorities still face discrimination, prejudice, hate speech and harmful attitudes on many levels in everyday life: at home, at school, in the workplace and at hobbies. Being yourself can be scary and discriminatory practices produce a feeling that there is something wrong with oneself. It is important to make visible diversity and the fact that everyone is valuable as is. We would like to remind you that it is the responsibility of all to create environments in which everyone feels good and safe.

Lahti Pride is organized entirely by volunteers. The event is organized in cooperation with the local companies and associations. Cooperation is an extremely important resource for the Lahti Pride event to succeed. There is no other party in the area to organize activities for people in the sexual and gender minorities, nor are there meeting places, bars or cafes that support rainbow identities. The Pride event is therefore an extremely important part of the local rainbow culture.

Participation in the Lahti Pride Parade 2019 and the other events is open to all. You do not need to belong to a sexual or a gender minority or be a member of Lahden Seta to participate. Everyone is welcome here.

By participating in Lahti Pride 2019 you express your support for diversity, equality and love!
